Happy Friday Families,

This week we started to play with fractions and learning all about fractions.  Please stay tuned for a letter early next week regarding making pizza to help build our understanding of fractions through cooking.  Mrs. Mahon says that helping cook at home will also be beneficial.

We are learning cursive writing and have learned the letters, a, c, d, g and o.

We are learning to write proper paragraphs in writing.  In reading we are starting guiding reading and Ms. Blake will be helping.  It is awesome.

We have been playing floor hockey in gym and next week Mr. Bennett will help us learn about ringette.

We have been doing circle to express our feelings and how our days went.

We will be building 3D maps of Alberta and Canada in the next few weeks, please send recyclables with your child, to help us build.

As the weather gets warmer, continue to plan for wet days, cold days maybe and prepare accordingly.

Good Afternoon Families,

First, I would like to say a very special thank you to all of your wonderful students who come into the classroom everyday. They bring smiles, laughter and a readiness to learn.

We are officially on winter break.  School is back in on Thursday, January 9, 2020.

When we come back we will continue to focus on literacy, asking and answering questions, doing research, look at electricity and electrical circuits.  We will be dividing, working with fractions and decimals and then moving on to shape, space, measurement and data.

Thank you for a great 4 months and I look forward to the next 6.

I do ask that you continue to read with your children daily, that you encourage them to write regularly, and practice basic facts in math.

Have a wonderful break, enjoy the time spent with each other.

Happy Weekend Families,

Next week is the last week of school before the winter break. The students' last day of school is Thursday December 19th. It is a full day.

The Winter Celebration through song will take place on Wednesday morning at 8:30 and also on Thursday afternoon at 1pm. You are all invited to attend. Please let your student know which event you will be attending, so we have the correct amount of chairs available. 

Thursday, December 19 is "Comfy Clothing Day" - this is where your child is able to come to school in what they are most comfortable in (sweatpants, pyjamas, etc).

We have had lots of fun exercising in our gym classes through yoga this week, developing movement skills and good posture. 

In math we continue to work on division. The grade 4s have been focusing on dividing 2-digit numbers and the 5s focus on 3-digit numbers.

The grade 4s and 5s continued to explore simple machines, building devices that move through testing and experimentation. They were able to experiment using Lego and by building a solar powered car and a windmill.

In literacy, the Grade 4s and Grade 5s wrote their own creation stories following their study of traditional stories. They learned about oral stories and tales from Indigenous groups of the west, east, north, central and Atlantic regions of Canada.

In social studies the G4s and G5s formulated questions for their research into different regions of Canada connecting with human needs. 

As always, we ask that you continue to support your child to read every day. 

Just a few simple reminders: 

1. Please ensure that they have appropriate clothing for the ever-changing weather we experience in Calgary. 

2.  Please refrain from parking in front of the school to avoid traffic issues.  Also, school parking lots, are not for student drop off or pick up as it is unsafe if CBE staff are coming and going on a regular basis.

3.  Please use the crosswalks.

Happy Friday Families,

This week we have been learning how to make our own creation stories.

In division we made cheeseburgers (not real ones) to help us remember the steps to divide.  We are finally learning how to do long division.

We crafted windmills with Lego.  We are learning about simple machines and how we can use wind power and sunlight to generate electricity.

We got play games in the gym with Ms. Coldbeck's class.  We were playing rock/paper/scissors in teams.

We are doing winter tree art, using both pencil crayons and water color pencils.

On December 18th at 8:30 or December 19th at 1:00 - parents are invited to join us in our Winter Concert.  (Times may not be correct, stay tuned, for confirmation)

Remember:
1. Students need to be dressed for any kind of weather in Calgary.  We do go outside up to -19 degrees Celsius.

2.  PLEASE - for the safety of our students do not J- WALK.  Drivers can't stop that fast.  PLEASE use the crosswalk, and park outside the handicap zones.   Thank you.

Hi,

In writing we are learning about Inuit and Mi'kmaq creation stories.  We have listened to, retold orally and rewritten the tales we have learned about.

We are learning how to multiply double digit numbers.  We are next going to learn about division.  We are going to build "cheeseburgers" to help us remember how to divide.

In science we are building windmills using lego and wind power.  We are also learning about how windmills are powered.   Last week we finished building and testing our solar powered cars.

In social we are learning about the regions of Canada and Alberta.  We are using computers, text books and reference books to help us find the information we need.  We will be using this information to build 3D maps of Canada and Alberta.

In Phys Ed we have finished basketball, played some soccer and tag games.  December will see us doing dance and yoga.  Please remember to dress appropriately for these activities.

In Music we are practicing our songs.  Stay tuned for more information.

In art we made fingerpainted trees and today we are using watercolor pencils to create winter trees again, in a different style.

Our student teacher has been working with us to create our most magnificent idea and we will continue these after winter break.

Hello Families,

Another week has come and gone, and we are keeping as busy as ever in our classroom.

We are continuing to write about the Indigenous Peoples of Canada through stories and making connections.

We are reading a variety of items from textbooks, non-fiction reference books and fiction books that range from picture books to chapter books.  We will be starting our home reading program next week and have been given a large cart of books to share with Rooms 15 and 13.  We are excited to take books home to read on a regular basis. 

Parents, it is important to read with your children or have your children read to you on a daily basis.  Also, it helps for you to ask questions about what they are reading to help with understanding.

We are learning double digit multiplication and beginning to learn about long division in math.  Xtra math will assist in learning the multiplication facts quicker.

In social we will be putting together a 3D map of both Canada and Alberta.  We are looking for recyclable materials from home if you have any to help with this project over the next 4 weeks.

In science we are using Lego to build vehicles and devices that have a variety of moving parts.

The grade 4 students have recently had a fabulous time at the Grey Cup Party at Stampede Park.

Rom 16 has been super busy and really excited about new happenings in the school and the classroom.

We are learning about indigenous tales in writing and we are hoping to soon, begin writing our own creation stories.

In science we spent a day at Telus Spark learning about solar power and other forms of energy to help make things move.  We then got to invent our own item that would help in space.  Some of the amazing ideas were a garden, coffee warmer, vacuum, puppy to play with, a space rover and a solar powered car.  The students enjoyed the entire day. We will also be doing a Magnificent Idea invention with Ms. Reid, our student teacher.

We are currently learning about the regions of Canada and Alberta in Social Studies.  We would like to create 3D maps of each of these, and may need assistance with recycled materials.  If you have any items that you can donate to the class, that would be amazing.

Multiplication is our focus for a couple of weeks in mathematics and students are learning different tricks to help them remember their times tables.

The grade 4s are headed off on a quick field trip to celebrate Grey Cup on Thursday, November 21, and we are in need of a volunteer or two, please let us know if you are available.

The grade 3/4/5 groups did an amazing job at the Remembrance Day Assembly, and thank you to all parents who showed up for support.
