Hi,

In writing we are learning about Inuit and Mi'kmaq creation stories.  We have listened to, retold orally and rewritten the tales we have learned about.

We are learning how to multiply double digit numbers.  We are next going to learn about division.  We are going to build "cheeseburgers" to help us remember how to divide.

In science we are building windmills using lego and wind power.  We are also learning about how windmills are powered.   Last week we finished building and testing our solar powered cars.

In social we are learning about the regions of Canada and Alberta.  We are using computers, text books and reference books to help us find the information we need.  We will be using this information to build 3D maps of Canada and Alberta.

In Phys Ed we have finished basketball, played some soccer and tag games.  December will see us doing dance and yoga.  Please remember to dress appropriately for these activities.

In Music we are practicing our songs.  Stay tuned for more information.

In art we made fingerpainted trees and today we are using watercolor pencils to create winter trees again, in a different style.

Our student teacher has been working with us to create our most magnificent idea and we will continue these after winter break.

Hello Families,

Another week has come and gone, and we are keeping as busy as ever in our classroom.

We are continuing to write about the Indigenous Peoples of Canada through stories and making connections.

We are reading a variety of items from textbooks, non-fiction reference books and fiction books that range from picture books to chapter books.  We will be starting our home reading program next week and have been given a large cart of books to share with Rooms 15 and 13.  We are excited to take books home to read on a regular basis. 

Parents, it is important to read with your children or have your children read to you on a daily basis.  Also, it helps for you to ask questions about what they are reading to help with understanding.

We are learning double digit multiplication and beginning to learn about long division in math.  Xtra math will assist in learning the multiplication facts quicker.

In social we will be putting together a 3D map of both Canada and Alberta.  We are looking for recyclable materials from home if you have any to help with this project over the next 4 weeks.

In science we are using Lego to build vehicles and devices that have a variety of moving parts.

The grade 4 students have recently had a fabulous time at the Grey Cup Party at Stampede Park.

Happy Weekend Families,

Rom 16 has been super busy and really excited about new happenings in the school and the classroom.

We are learning about indigenous tales in writing and we are hoping to soon, begin writing our own creation stories.

In science we spent a day at Telus Spark learning about solar power and other forms of energy to help make things move.  We then got to invent our own item that would help in space.  Some of the amazing ideas were a garden, coffee warmer, vacuum, puppy to play with, a space rover and a solar powered car.  The students enjoyed the entire day. We will also be doing a Magnificent Idea invention with Ms. Reid, our student teacher.

We are currently learning about the regions of Canada and Alberta in Social Studies.  We would like to create 3D maps of each of these, and may need assistance with recycled materials.  If you have any items that you can donate to the class, that would be amazing.

Multiplication is our focus for a couple of weeks in mathematics and students are learning different tricks to help them remember their times tables.

The grade 4s are headed off on a quick field trip to celebrate Grey Cup on Thursday, November 21, and we are in need of a volunteer or two, please let us know if you are available.

The grade 3/4/5 groups did an amazing job at the Remembrance Day Assembly, and thank you to all parents who showed up for support.

Good Afternoon Cappy Smart Families,

We might be coming home a little more tired this week after a week long break.  We have once again been busy reviewing things we have already learned, and by learning things that are completely new to us. 

We have begun to introduce Aboriginal Stories to help introduce us to story telling in literacy.  We are listening to, and discussing stories from Canada's Northwest and Western Indigenous People and comparing them to our own stories.  We are hoping that we will get to writing our own stories as we move forward.

Division is the topic of choice in mathematics this week. We have enjoyed learning to create arrays to represent groups and then to break those larger groups into smaller, equal groups.  We are taking a break next week from our regular mathematics program and we are going to do some Pumpkin Math.  We have had the opportunity to receive a very large pumpkin  from Save-On-Foods and we are going to use our mathematical skills and other pumpkins to enhance our skill development in multiple areas of math.  We are looking forward to gaining knowledge, having fun and getting messy.

We will be heading into Remembrance Day learning and writing for two weeks and would like to invite families to join us for our assembly on November 8, 10:30 am to 11:00 am.  Please look for the invitation to come home.

We have a field trip to Telus Spark on November 7, 2019.  We were given the field trip forms to fill out and return.  The cost of the field trip per student is $6.00, and we would like payment and forms back by Tuesday, November 5, 2019.  We also need up to 14 volunteers, so please, if you are able to volunteer, please let us know.  Thank you.

We are learning about simple machines and then building devices and vehicles that move in science, which also ties into our field trip to Telus Spark. 

Learning about continents, Canada and Alberta in mapping and the geographical features of both is where we are going to support our learning in social studies.

Hello Wonderful Families,

It is halfway through our well deserved break as the students of Room 16 have been working very hard since August.  Take time to relax and enjoy family this Thanksgiving holiday/break.

I would like to say thank you to all families who attended our Parent/Teacher Conferences a week ago.  It is such a wonderful feeling to share successes and goals with parents.  I look forward to another successful couple of months with my wonderful students.

As we move forward in all subject areas, just a few quick hints and tips that may help your child along the way:

1.  Read everyday, either to your child, or let your child read to you.  As you read or they read, stop and ask questions about what is being read.  This helps with understanding what is being read.

2.  Math - practicing basic addition/subtraction/multiplication and division facts is very helpful.  If you were at interviews you may have received a message for Xtramath.  If not, your child will get these on Monday.  It is a fun way to practice daily.  Also, Prodigy Math is a fun way to learn and understand concepts.

3.  In regards to reading, if I spoke to your child about a mini book report, then please help them with this, as I can't wait to hear all about what they are reading at home.  If I didn't get a chance to speak with you, then all I ask is that the students be prepared to share with their classmates a little about what they read at home this break.  A mini book report would be awesome and this would include: characters, setting, problem, solution and whether or not the student liked the book.  They can do a video, poster, book jacket, oral report or a simple written one.  Whatever they choose will be accepted.

Happy Friday Everyone,

We had our community potluck dinner last night. It was good. All students have participated in music and many got to share the song "Glorious" with families.  Everyone was delighted to try new foods.  The food was delicious and we all had a great time.

We have started reading Front Desk by Kelly Yang for the Global Read Aloud.  The students are beginning to ask a lot of fabulous questions.  We will be using technology to communicate our understanding and thoughts about the book with a grade 5 class from New York City. 

Orange Shirt Day happened on Monday, but we recognized it yesterday. We have been learning about Residential Schools and their effect of many children and their families.  We also created hexagons which displayed what is important to us.

We had the Terry Fox run and did a fabulous job.

The Scholastic Book Fair will continue on Monday.  Please, feel free to send money with your student on Monday and they can have a chance to buy a book and support our library and the chance to have another book fair in the spring.

Parent Teacher Interviews are next Thursday evening from 4 - 7:30, and Friday morning from 8 - 12pm.  There is no school on Friday next week, which is then followed by a week long Fall Break.

Room 16 students wish to let you know of a few things we have been doing in the past week and give you a glance at what lies ahead.  

We are looking forward to the Community Potluck on October 3.

Farm to School Fundraiser has been extended to Tuesday, October 1.  All fundraising helps Cappy Smart School do amazing activities.

We are now learning to write in cursive.  We practiced the letters a and c.

The Terry Fox Run is on October 2, from 2:00 - 2:45PM. Please keep your eyes on the forecast and dress for the appropriate weather.  Dressing in layers is best, as it is easier to remove a jacket than have to find one to put on.

Parents, for the safety of yourselves and our wonderful students, please use the crosswalk.  It is not safe to cross in the middle of the street as many cars do not follow the speed limit and therefore may not be able to stop in time.

Ms. Townsend read us the book titled Emmanuel's Dream.  It is about a boy in Africa who overcame his disability to ride around the country of Ghana on a bicycle.  Emmanuel reminds us of our very own Terry Fox.

We have finished Goldilocks and the Three Bears and are now moving on to legends, and stories in ELA.

Global Read Aloud begins next week and we will be reading the book Front Desk by Kelly Yang.  We will also be connecting with a grade 5 classroom in New York City throughout the Read Aloud.

In science we have talked about water and water conservation.  Parents, let your wonderful children tell you how to save water.

Orange Shirt Day

We will be recognizing Orange Shirt Day on Thursday October 3, 2019. This will be an opportunity for students and staff to learn about the legacy of the residential schools, as well as indigenous ways of knowing. Staff will lead students through a variety of learning activities that will engage students in conversations about belonging, community, and inclusion. A powerful way to do this is through the indigenous pedagogy of circle. Circle defines inclusion, In the circle we are all equal. No one is above, no one is below. No one is in front, no one is behind. The Sacred Circle is designed to create unity. As a way to recognize this very important day, staff and students are encouraged to wear orange. This represents our continued commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Act as well as honoring the survivors of residential schools. If you have any questions please let us know.

Terry Fox Run

Our Terry Fox run will take place on Wednesday October 2 from 2:00pm-2:45pm. Students will gather for a short assembly, followed by a 20min Terry Fox run on the path close to the Marlborough Park Community Center. On the day of the run, students are encouraged to bring a Toonie for Terry to show their support and help raise money for cancer research. If you have any questions please let us know.
